Teacher Info – Darryl Rule

A specialist in teaching classical guitar, with over 15 years of teaching experience and 25 years of classical guitar study. As a teacher, Darryl has taught students of all ages, styles and levels – and is particularly patient with beginner students, yet is able to musically and technically challenge his more advanced students too. Darryl attended the University of Witwatersrand’s School of Music (Johannesburg, South Africa), where he continued his classical guitar studies with Fritz Buss and the late David Hewitt, two of South Africa’s most respected classical guitarists, teachers and composers of music for the guitar.

He specialized in Musicology and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2000. He has attended masterclasses with notable guitarists such as Stephan Rak and Helmut Jasbar, as well as with early music specialist and theorbo/lute player Vagard Lund. Recent master classes have been had with well known Grammy Award winning guitarist Bill Kanengiser (LAGQ); Helen Sanderson (UK), Vincent Lindsey-Clark, members of the New Zealand Guitar Quartet, South Korean classical guitarist Lee Song-Ou and Bosnian guitarist Denis Azebagic. Darryl has worked with respected Sydney-based teacher Rafaelle Agastino over the last few years who helped him prepare for, and ultimately graduate with both the Australian Music Education Board (AMEB) Associate Diploma (AMusA) and the Licentiate Diploma (LMusA) in Classical Guitar Performance.

Darryl not only teaches guitar but is a versatile performer too, having played in numerous musical settings and situations from background gigs to open-air festivals and musicals. Before moving to Sydney, Australia, he performed regularly in a guitar duo at corporate and private functions, and was a founder member of the Johannesburg Guitar Quartet. Darryl is currently a member of the mandolin and plucked instrument ensemble Plektra, (based in Sydney) who have been thrilling audiences both locally in Australia and also internationally on tours to Germany and the USA. He teaches privately from his home in Alexandria, close to the Sydney city centre, at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney, and at Ascham School in Edgecliff.

Darryl is an examiner in Classical Guitar for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB).
