Footstools
Historically, the classical guitar has always been performed with the neck angled upwards, to facilitate efficient movent of the left hand.
Initially, this posture was maintained either by use of a ribbon (strap), or in the case of the flamenco players, with crossed legs helping to support the guitar at the correct height and angle.
A solution that became convention early on in the history of the classical guitar was the us the use of a foot stool under the left foot, which when placing the guitar’s larger bout on the inside of the right leg and the smaller bout on top of the left thigh, helped lift the guitar to the most comfoprtable playing position.
Although there are now other devices that can be used as alternatives, the use of the humble footstool is still the most popular way of maintaing the correct angle and is still considered by many to be the best way to teach beginners and younger students.
